About
Greenfinch Light Opera is a new opera/theatre company in Boston, focused on performing operetta. Our first production will be Victor Herbert’s 1911 operetta The Enchantress, taking place in April 2027. Combining elements of musical theatre and opera, our project will be a fully staged, costumed, and choreographed production performed with piano accompaniment. Why Operetta?
Operetta is an under-represented genre in the current performing arts landscape. There is a whole canon of rarely performed American operetta (a direct predecessor of the Broadway musical!), and we want to give it new life and bring it to new audiences. Why The Enchantress?
Though the show is rarely performed these days, The Enchantress includes one of the most famous diva songs, beloved by musical theatre performers and opera singers alike. What soprano hasn't belted out the song known by such various names as "Art is Calling for Me", "The Prima Donna Song", and "I Want to be a Prima Donna".In musical and opera spaces, around three fourths of people who audition are treble voices, often female-identifying, yet most shows performed have casts weighted heavily toward tenor, baritone, and bass roles. One of our goals is to prioritize shows with more opportunities for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and alto singers in named roles. The Enchantress has 11 roles for soprano/mezzo/alto, 4 roles for tenor/baritone/bass, and 1 role for any gender.
